The Battle of Grand Port

A channel at the heart of history.

In 1598, Wybrand Van Warwyck’s Dutch squadron landed at Grand Port and named the island; the first Dutch settlement followed only in 1638. Then, from 20 to 27 August 1810, the frigates HMS Sirius, Nereide, Iphigenia and Magicienne fought French ships in the bay. The crews of Sirius and Magicienne burned their ships; Mahébourg’s museum holds objects recovered from the Magicienne wreck.
